A pair of Central Florida members of the House of Representatives are working across the aisle to provide a briefing for state officials regarding Russian interference into the 2016 elections, including the breaching of systems right here in Florida outlined in the Mueller Report. (story HERE).
It’s makes everyone look good, while also being the right thing to do.
Republican or Democrat, we can all point at the Russians and use them to score some points with the voters in being vigilant against these threats. The Mueller Report paints an impressive picture of what Russian entities both public and private did in their attempts to effect the outcome of our elections.
The two parties can go back to attacking each other anytime, but here we can get the briefing, take the picture and demonstrate we’re working together to prevent this from happening again.
But if we’re taking a step back from cynicism, if the right personnel gets the right information then it will be a step in the right direction to prevent it from happening again.
This is an opportunity. Are they going to make the most of it? When are we going to get a plan of action from all of the lawmakers attending that briefing into what their plans are to prevent any further interference.
And there had better be attempts to make as much of that information available to the press. We don’t need this group blaming their security clearances as an excuse for why they’re not providing any answers to us.
If Florida needs anything, it’s a 2020 election free of controversy with the whole world watching. If the process feels slightly off, the losing side “lawyers up” and confidence to conduct problem-free elections continues to get dragged through the mud.
This is a chance for a rare win-win for lawmakers.
A win allowing them to raise their profiles while doing what’s right for voters. That doesn’t happen everyday in their line of work.
