Florida and indeed Orlando, is one of the biggest destinations in college football come bowl season. We host three bowl games, all nationally televised, and even a New Year’s Day match-up coveted by the major programs. We’ve played these games at Camping World Stadium, a recently renovated facility, that nicely accommodates the many out of town fans that travel with their teams.
This week, the Cure Bowl, a game that looks to draw awareness to breast cancer prevention and research was moved to the smaller Orlando City Stadium. This is a check down of seats from 65,000 to 25,000, with a game reportedly averaging 21,100 in attendance (story HERE).
I remember covering the announcement of the first Cure Bowl several years back with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. In addition to more economic stimulation for downtown Orlando, it carries a purpose of defeating a disease that unfortunately most likely effects someone in our lives or someone we know.
We have to try and do better to support this game.
This isn’t a dig at any of the organizers. The game hosts representatives from AAC and the Sun Belt Conference. At this point, it’s not really designed to blockbuster bowl game, but with so many other games trying to flex it’s commercial muscle on everything from tax services to steak houses, it’s important that we use this national platform on an important cause such as this one to it’s fullest.
What can you do? Well, you can buy a ticket for the next game. We don’t know what teams will be playing but with the proximity of Church Street, we’re going to have an environment that allows visitors to have a good time while being educated and empowered to do some good.
You can also just talk about it. Tell your friends about the game and if you’ve been effected by breast cancer make an attempt to support the game or Breast Cancer Research Foundation in your own way.
Let’s sell out that next game, and send a message of the kind of good college football can do beyond the gridiron.
