Wendy’s has been trying their hand at breakfast for some time now, but when we think of a fast food first meal, our steering wheels still aim for the competition.
Our square burger brothers are hoping to change that with an ad push that focuses on items that aren’t available at a McDonald’s or Burger King. We’re talking about a honey butter chicken biscuit, the breakfast Baconator, and some trusted favorites like a breakfast croissant sandwich and others.
While the rollout for these was earlier this year (story HERE), we’ve seen the ads have been running on heavy rotation on television here in the mid-west.
I’m not complaining. In fact, I’ll try to make it there sometime this week.
But the chain faces the same obstacles it has when trying to fend off the clown and the king in the chicken nugget game (story HERE). And that is the battle for locations. For the right product, I’ll drive an extra five minutes for the better experience but that’s really about it when it comes to the fast food cravings.
And in some markets the competition can be tougher. Throw in a Chik-Fil-A with their impressive (but pricy) breakfast as well as a Hardees, and things only get more difficult for new items to breakthrough. And when you talk breakfast, you have to talk coffee, then Starbucks and Dunkin’ are in your space now too.
Still, Wendy’s deserves a spot in the breakfast food war. It’s just a matter of if these ads can get the cars in the drive through.
