Bernie Sanders making a mistake leaving Florida off his southern swing

This weekend, Vermont Senator and second time Presidential hopeful, Bernie Sanders, is going on a “southern swing” as he tries to make up ground to former Vice President, Joe Biden, in the polls.

The swing includes North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.

No Florida. That’s right, a southern swing without one of the biggest battlegrounds in next year’s election.

I’m trying to think this one out.

First, let me try to get inside the campaign’s head. It’s possible they could be coming to Florida next week. That would be easy. End of story.

But if he is indeed leaving the region without visiting us, it’s making me believe that he’s already given Florida to Biden, where the former Veep has already been endorsed by a slate of state lawmakers and is holding a couple of fundraisers over the next few weeks.

The polls would certainly support that logic (story HERE). Bernie is down by more than three touchdowns to Joe.

But we’re still months out and there are still the debates. Donald Trump will eventually start attacking and spending money to weaken Biden, it’s coming. It’s way too early to start giving up ground.

His campaign could be triaging states and trying to push for a long and brutal primary like he had with Hillary in 2016. They could be trying to grind out the support needed to push Biden over.

That plan also has flaws. There are still Democrats that believe the party won’t let him be the nominee. I believe a Berine nomination makes a lot of the Democratic establishment very nervous.

This is the equivalent of fighting a 12 round boxing match, just to realize the judges went to college with your opponent.

They can’t afford to take anything for granted.

We should also remember that Florida was the source of some of Bernie’s biggest supporters. Democrats right here in Orange County deployed to northern states to help him out in 2016.

Now they don’t even get a rally without having to drive out of the state. Thanks for nothing.

Bernie should take another look at his map and really reconsider the approach he’s taking with the Sunshine State.
