Tua Tagovailoa is going to be a Miami Dolphin.
For the first time in a while, there is going to be a big name rookie quarterback down south. Tagovailoa got high marks across the board for his play in college and there aren’t too many critics that can blame the Dolphins for making this pick.
There is risk though. He has a notable history of injury (story HERE). Other teams in might have passed on him and pushed their chips in with their incumbent quarterback or free agency.
Not Miami. They had to take Tua.
If not now, when?
The team is getting better. It’s hard to believe that a Brady-less AFC East will yield fewer wins for the Dolphins. Buffalo is improving, but not out of Miami’s reach in a close game. The Jets? At this point, who knows?
There was talk that Miami could have taken Justin Herbert, who went to San Diego a short time later.
With the information we have, there is no data that can illustrate Herbert’s ceiling is higher than Tua’s. And you have to draft with the information that you have.
There is also going to be a lot more optimism in Miami moving forward. Much more than last season when we declared the Dolphins season DOA before the first pre season game. That won’t be the case this time.
Now, when we get training camp footage from the Dolphins, all eyes will be on Tua and we’ll have analysts on television asking when he gets the start. Hopefully there won’t be too much of a rush. More time means they’re winning and setting up Tua to succeed.
We’ll wince every time he takes a hit, but we’ll also cheer when he finds that receiver deep.
And if it doesn’t work out, then we can’t get mad at the Dolphins. Not for this one.
The time has long passed for the team to make a real push to compete and that begins with the most important position in sports. Quarterback.
