Have you had the chance to watch any of the coverage from the NFL draft in Nashville?
Everyone is having a great time. We’ve got fans from every NFL team, live music, superstar players from past and present, and it’s basically full blown street party. It’s received full prime time media attention, and it’s providing economic stimulation for Nashville.
We should want it for Orlando.
Let’s address our single drawback. We’re currently not home to an NFL team.
When you compare it to what we do have to offer, the NFL needs to give us a strong look.
We are in the center of three other NFL markets within easy driving distance in Florida.
We are a tested and successful football market that hosts multiple college bowl games each year. We are also home to the fans and alumni to several nationally recognized college football programs.
We have the second biggest convention center in the United States for satellite events and conferences.
We’ve hosted world class sporting events including the world cup, the NCAA tournament, NBA All Star games, and two Wrestlemanias.
We have Church Street, which when compared to the similar location in Nashville, is a perfectly suitable venue with built in vendors, transportation, and nearby lodging.
We’ve also hosted NFL Pro Bowls and pre season games, all while continuing to be the tourism capital of the United States. We’ve got Harry Potter, Mickey Mouse and Legos, the families certainly want to be here.
That’s just a few points our way, and there are plenty more.
The NFL draft, along with the pre season and pro bowl is also a chance for the league to include major media markets that haven’t had expansion come their way. Orlando is an NFL ready town, but until the winds of the league change direction we’re still on the outside looking in.
Of course, the push starts here at home. Local leaders should look into bringing that special kind of experience that’s happening right now in Nashville to Orlando.
