Godzilla King of the Monsters really is a tale of two films. One that roars to the big screen with epic monster battles and first rate special effects, and a second with a human element that spoils the entire thing.
The film picks up a few years after the “Titans”, which dwell within the earth were brought to life. There are many others besides our title monster and a group of Eco-terrorists want to unleash them on this earth.
And after meeting some of the characters in this film, you might want that too.
The human sub plots are garbage. We know actors like Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Vera Farmiga (The Departed), the legendary Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), can act but the awful chemistry and dialog will make you regret any time invested on them.
Simply put, any time the camera is on them and not the monsters the film suffers. There are times when I wished I could have pressed “mute” on a remote control when they were talking.
On the plus side, director Michael Dougherty, knows how to bring the city smashing action to the audience. The fights are spectacular and the visuals extraordinary. We can also easily see what’s happening. Darkness is an often overused tool during action sequences these days, but these sequences are a joy to watch.
But, ultimately and unfortunately, Godzilla is dragged down by the humans in the movie and that’s too bad.
Do stay during the credits though, you’ll be rewarded. This is a franchise after all.
