Saturday Night Live: JJ Watt tries to catch the Super Bowl crowd

Saturday Night Live continued their post holiday sprint last night with NFL All Pro JJ Watt and country music star Luke Combs, on the eve of Super Bowl 54.

The show started out with a “Fantasy Impeachment Trial” featuring Judge Terrence Mathis instead of Chief Justice John Roberts presiding over the proceedings, which featured Alec Baldwin showing up for his regular Donald Trump character.

Athletes and Saturday Night Live are always a tricky combination but Watt did a serviceable job with a few football spoofed commercial spots before the big game, a strong “Rudy” paraody, and a funny Madden 21 skit. Weekend Update also featured the impeachment and the corona virus with Bowen Yang returning as the Chinese health official providing his take of recent events.

Combs was also fine with “Beer never broke my heart”, a crowd pleaser among his fans that might have won him a few new ones. Country music doesn’t frequent SNL that often.

Next week’s musical guest is an SNL return from Justin Bieber, Rupaul will be hosting the show for the first time.
