A lot of buzz today about Quibi (stories HERE and HERE). The platform which promoted high quality, bite sized, content has it’s free trial period coming to an end and it’s unclear how many people are sticking around to pay for the service.
You haven’t read a lot about Quibi here because I’m going through the same thing that is likely the main problem for Quibi.
We’re running out of minutes in a day. And no one is talking about it.
We’re flooded with streaming content. Even during a pandemic when we’ve got more time than ever for it, we’re getting screen fatigue.
This isn’t an indictment of content on Quibi. “The Most Dangerous Game” and “Survive” look fine but aren’t generating enough buzz to produce content for. And there are still more programs coming, but there are plenty of shows on the track right now for audiences. Too many.
You could have said many of the same things about Apple TV, which has seen a lot of it’s programs outside of “The Morning Show” fall flat. There just isn’t anymore time and patience for another service besides NetFlix, Hulu, Amazon, Disney Plus, Cable and Network TV. We’re not even mentioning our YouTube habits.
And those bills are stacking up.
Let’s not write off Quibi yet. Quite the opposite really. Are we giving it a fair shot?
Is there a Quibi program you like? Let me know. You’d be the first conversation I’ve had about the subject.
