Disney made right call moving “Soul” to Plus on Christmas at no additional cost to subscribers

The Mouse is giving us a Christmas gift after all.

Disney announced on Friday that Pixar’s “Soul”, the story of a Jazz musician caught between life and death the day of the biggest concert of his life, will bypass theaters and be released on Disney Plus on Christmas Day (story HERE).

At no additional cost.

That last part is important because Disney ruffled a lot of feathers pulling “Mulan” from theaters and charging an additional cost of $30 for viewers to watch it on streaming, on top of what they’re already paying each month for the service.

While Mulan was a winner (review HERE), the additional charge put it out of reach of many subscribers who might be singles or couples and might not be budgeted for a family sized charge. Mulan will also be free this Decemeber.

This is good news. Pixar rarely throws out underwhelming movies and the story seems absolutely perfect for a Christmas time viewing. I know I’ll be there.

And the movie theater industry as a whole continues to suffer, with locations remaining closed or being re-shuttered during the Coronavirus pandemic. It’s unclear where or when relief will come from in one of the most hardest hit industries in the country.

The fate of another big Disney and Marvel project “Black Widow”, starring Scarlett Johannson, is still in limbo. Fans of the MCU have demanded Disney wait until movie theaters recover to release the highly anticipated film on the big screen.
