There is a lot to like about UCF hiring former Auburn Head Coach, Gus Malzahn, to replace Josh Heupel, after the latter abandoned Orlando to go and coach a troubled Tennessee Volunteers program.
Malzahn is a name. An actual recognizable figure in college football that should raise some eyebrows around the NCAA. This gentlemen knows how to recruit. How to coach in big games.
And he knows how to win. Let’s hope he can pull us out of this back slide that his predecessor left us in.
Gus Malzahn will also be a better fit here in Central Florida. Surrounded by other major programs like Florida and Miami. Oh, we also have Florida State.
What is also important is that his name might actually command some respect form commentators around the nation that still don’t believe UCF is a major program, despite not losing for almost two years.
They need that SEC experience. We have that now.
Most importantly is that this coach, along with new Athletic Director, Terry Mohajir, can bring back some stability that we haven’t seen in quite some time. Even when we were winning UCF was still dealing with building scandal involving the unauthorized expenditure of funds which resulted in a school leadership overhaul.
That didn’t keep former AD Danny White from asking for more money.
But it’s time to move on. And now we can do that.
This is a good hire. And now it’s time to get back to winning. It doesn’t matter what I think if this team doesn’t return to the playoff conversation.
Finally, some good news for UCF Football. Their fans deserve more of it.
