25 Years Later: “Jerry Maguire” is still so much fun to watch

On this edition of the FTR 25 years later movie retrospective of 1996, we’re talking about Jerry Maguire.

“The human head weighs 8 pounds”
“You complete me.”
“Help me, help you.”
“Show me the money!”

Let’s have some fun.

Where I saw it: The Interstate 6 in Altamonte Springs, currently known as the Altamonte Springs Picture Show.

Starring: Tom Cruise, Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (for this film), Oscar winner Regina King, And two time Oscar winner, Renee Zellweger. And the late great Kelly Preston.

Memorable scene: So many. But I’ve got to choose the scene that made me laugh so hard, I couldn’t see straight.

Reviewing it 25 Years Later:
Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr’s finest acting performances are in this Cameron Crowe classic that also gave us Zellweger at the beginning of her career. A quarter of a century later, it serves as a funny throw back to the mid 90s that still manages to capture the attention of the viewer. Yeah, it’s really mushy for a few scenes but that’s what also made it more endearing for the audience at the time (that Springsteen soundtrack). The humor is ahead of it’s time, and you could even argue for the strength of the material as a sports movie.

It’s such a smart and crisp film that jogs along with Cruise’s narration. And we haven’t even talked about Jay Mohr’s turn as one of the most despicable heels of his time. The bizarre part is that this wasn’t even Cruise’s biggest film of the year. The first Mission Impossible came out just a few months earlier.

But it’s still one of his best films. And strictly as an actor, it’s his best outing.

Jerry Maguire:
