Orlando Magic should consider Damian Lillard coaching preferences, even if he’s not coming here

The NBA world is currently aflutter with word that Portland Trailblazers superstar, Damian Lillard, wants out of the mid market team he’s been loyal to for years after not being consulted on their next head coach, Chauncey Billups, according to reports.

I think the Magic should find out what names he would prefer to be coached by and give them a call.

Now, let’s be real. If the Magic were a sharp and modern franchise, we’d actually be in the mix to make a play for Lillard, a franchise transforming player who could put us on the map. But that won’t happen. We’ve built a culture here that repels big names. You can blame the front office for that.

But finding out what names Lillard prefers would give us some insight into which coaches the superstars want to play for in case we do get our act together.

And I’ll add that this drama should weigh heavily if the team is thinking about hiring Lillard’s former coach, Terry Stotts.

If he couldn’t keep Dame happy in Rip City, what is he going to do here in Orlando?

You have to look at the body of work that was left behind by the candidate before you invite him in to build something for you.

Also, before I hit publish on this post, it was revealed that the team is seriously considering hiring Penny Hardaway as a coach.

That would be interesting. But could he build a franchise that would draw big names?

We’ll just have to wait and see.
