John Madden: EA should put him back on the cover of what he created

We lost John Madden today. He was 85. His passing marks the end of an important chapter in sports for generations of football fans. There was no one like him. And there will never be again.

If you’re under 30, it’s possible you may have missed the Madden era of football broadcasting. But like so many of us, you’ve played Madden Football.

It used to be John Madden Football. Then it became John Madden “Football Talk” Football and featured his voice. His trademark analysis, as well as his classic “Boom!” and “Where did that truck come from?!” were lines we loved.

He also used to be on the cover. Every year.

But then EA started using cover athletes. It’s been going on for 20 years and it’s been something of both a gift and a curse.

A gift, in that it was a landmark achievement for the football player that grace it’s cover. And a curse in which it usually meant that he would get injured that same year. They actually called it the Madden curse.

Now that he has left us. We need to put John Madden back on the cover of the game he’s responsible for. It’s only right.

I’ve been playing the game for over 30 years. I’ve never lost fact that it’s his game.

He needs to go back on the cover next year and we need to call it “John Madden football”.

We can go back to the marketing pushes later. But we have a responsibility to pause and pay our respects to this legend.

I’m grateful to have heard him do what he loved. And that’s enjoying football.
