AEW Dynamite: Wardlow ascending as possible face turn moves forward

Another great episode of AEW Dynamite. The post Cody Rhodes era of the promotion had a strong week amidst the controversy and did so by elevating the young talent.

Wardlow isn’t necessarily that young, but his work remains one of my favorite parts of the show. I really enjoyed that match with Max Caster, from the opening rap to the final pinfall, with the “Accounta-billy Buddy” Shawn Spears jumping in at the end. Both of them looked good, and watching this crowd come to a boil as Wardlow’s possible face turn approaches is a lot of fun. The crowd is reacting and the viewers (including myself) care. And that’s the first rule of building a star.

Some other highlights.

We had sensei John Krese (the wonderful Martin Kove) in a promo and Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenaged Witch, Clarissa Explains It All) in the stands. A wonderful random combination of celebrities in Nashville.

And the Cobra Kai angle lead to a terrific match between Mercedes Martines and Thunder Rosa. They could have gone longer and I would have been fine with it.

Those tag team Battle Royales in the coming weeks are going to be great. We’ll probably get The Young Bucks vs. Red Dragon vs. Jurassic Express for the titles at Revolution (right here in Orlando on March 6th) and that will also be a banger.

You don’t need this blog to tell you that Sammy Guevara and Darby Allin had a great match for the TNT Title. Yeah, we had a goofy finish but both guys remained protected. It had to happen when you have two of “The Pillars” fighting each other. I’m looking forward to seeing Andrade and Matt take on both fighters in the near future.

I also took a small flash poll. Cody wasn’t missed tonight. But fans were still sad to see him go.

Great show! See you next week!
