Spielberg’s West Side Story lands on streaming and is most worthy of a look

West Side Story.

Sharks and Jets.

Tony and Maria.

Probably half a dozen screenings of the 1957 classic musical during your time in high school.

You know what you’re in for.

But the 2021 remake from Steven Spielberg arrives on various streaming platforms today, and is done so well that it deserves a look from both fans of the original and the younger generations who may be new to the entire experience.

My only problem with this film was the feature length, which is a hefty 2 hours and 36 minutes, but much like Hamilton with Disney Plus, experiencing the film at home takes a lot of the edge off, especially if you’re not a big musical guy like myself.

Everything else here is solid or exceptional. It’s one of Spielberg’s best looking movies in years. It’s all terrifically lit and scored. The leads Rache Zegler as Maria and Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Tony nail the starring roles nicely, and the recent award wins are warranted.

All of the musical numbers are excellent and the choreography some of the best we’ve seen. Spielberg is able to create a moving painting here that transitions seamlessly. The action is solid for what it is, and there is almost no lag. Its also very nice to see original star, Rita Moreno in this.

West Side Story didn’t do well in theaters. Probably because it was too long and it’s too expensive of a risk for a musical you’ve probably seen before.

But on streaming, you’re all out of excuses.

West Side Story
