Discriminating Orlando landlord goes against what our community is all about

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ll hear me complaining about a lot of challenges that our community is currently going through.

But you’ll hear myself, and a lot of our local leaders brag about one thing specifically. Inclusivity.

We celebrate greatness on all levels here, from everywhere. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you’ve got a kind heart. It’s pretty neat. And it opens the door to all sorts of opportunity.

Which is why this story regarding our Orlando real estate scene really bothers me.

A local owner of an RV Park has been found in violation of the Fair Housing Act for discrimination.

This landlord “sent the tenant a letter in January 2021 stating that he was aware she” (the tenant) “was transitioning, and that she should act, talk and dress as a man in order to avoid trouble.” (full story HERE).

What this landlord did was wrong. And other members of the Orlando real estate and property management community should take note.

We’re currently in the middle of a rent crisis, where families aren’t making enough to keep a roof over there heads because of the region’s low wages. Orlando real estate has exploited this unregulated environment to try and squeeze as much money out of us as possible.

Now we have members of their occupation trying to not only take everything we have, but also determine who we are.

They’re trying to rule their communities like a kings and encroach on our identities.

They’re not kings. It’s wrong.

Orlando’s reputation as an inclusive community is already at risk with this rental crisis, on a financial scale because of their greed. Let’s not damage it even more by having abusive landlords try to change our identities.
