Night Court: Hooray for Wendy Malick!

Night Court was back with a new episode this week, and we got to deal with the revival of Dan’s legendary love life. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know how important preserving the Dan Fielding character was for me (story HERE).

And bringing in another accomplished sitcom vet in Wendy Malick was exactly the way to handle it.

Malick’s eventually unhinged stalker, pushed aside any overthinking on how to handle the legendary womanizer’s history. When you can afford to bring in talent like that, the performance can make legacy sticklers like myself focus on what’s going on in front of me. Not about the old stuff. It was a lot of fun.

One thing that was not a lot of fun was Olvia and Gurgs, who for the second week, pushed an unfunny angle. I know writers want multi tiered story telling and that usually works. But we’re not giving the talent much to work with. Love the actors. Don’t love the jokes. That calendar spot was bad.

Instead of that office hunting, we could have had more court in Night Court, which is what we really want.

And while we’re exploring more ways for humor, the show should consider some cut away laughs. Melissa’s stuff is funny, but having a visualization of the joke instead of canned laughter would be so much better. I understand that costs money. But still.

We can also see the show planting some seeds for the arrival of Rand. Melissa’s upstate boyfriend. Everything I know about sitcom television tells me that Rand will arrive. Be a jerk. They’ll be a break up. Dan will chew Rand out. And Melissa will be the one who has to start dating again.

I hope that’s all wrong. But the show was a winner this week. See you next time!

Please help me out below if you can. Thank you!
