You know exactly what you’re getting with “80 for Brady”, but you’re still here reading my review for this safe and room temperature comedy that is precisely what you think it is.
In 80 for Brady we get Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno as four longtime friends that have found a bond through Tom Brady and his championships with the New England Patriots. They’re all working through their late life issues but decide to go on the trip of a lifetime to the Super Bowl in Houston to watch Brady in action on the biggest stage.
Listen. It’s four movie stars that our parents and grandparents enjoyed, watching football and getting into silly adventures. It’s a harmless movie. Not a mean bone in its body.
And in my case it worked. Director Kyle Martin doesn’t do anything he shouldn’t with this cast. The jokes are light and the chemistry is there. If you happen to like football, the film also scores. This is Super Bowl LI, that was the Patriots coming back at halftime against the Atlanta Falcons in that history making game. There is also a heart behind this. And if the story doesn’t make you feel at least a little good, I don’t know what to say.
But the movie is what it is. There aren’t going to be any Marvel cameos. Thor isn’t going to show up here or anything. It’s this cast and Tom Brady.
If that sounds good, then “80 for Brady” makes for a feel good, rainy afternoon watch.
