Praise Petey: Why Petey’s dad could still be alive and why you should be hoping he is

Praise Petey premiered this week and the story of a young, stylish, and well, out of touch, New Yorker who finds herself down south after her deceased cult leader father dies, does leave itself a little room for intrigue between all of the adult jokes its currently fueled on.

I’ll offer up a storytelling possibility, and its a soap opera-ish angle that could be interesting.

To be concise, I don’t think that Petey’s dad is really dead.

Think about it. All we got was a tape. We didn’t get a cause of death. No one in New Utopia really closes the loop or explains how he dies. It just happens.

This creates an opportunity for dad to come back, and I’ll give you a couple of reasons why you should want him to come back.

First, it would be fun. Everyone would be torn between Petra and her dad. Maybe her dad did it because he felt the community was ungrateful to him. The dialog would also be pretty sharp.

Second, it would mean more Stephen Root (Barry) and his voice acting so far has been pretty good. He’s one of those actors that you find work for. Like Alan Tudyk.

And for those keeping score at home, that would technically mean that Eliza would be Petey’s stepmom. The awkwardness of that alone would be worth subscribing to. The synopses for the rest of the season have already been published, if this does happen, it would have to be at the end of this season’s finale.

A great way to end this campaign if the show does well ahead of a second season.

Let’s see what happens.
