If you haven’t checked out Stephen Curry: Underrated on Apple TV and you enjoy the game of basketball, or simply a good underdog story, then I’ll happily recommend it. It’s a feel good watch that’s less than two hours long and will heighten your knowledge on the best pure shooter in basketball history.
One of the ways the documentary fires you up, is in the first five minutes of it’s running time where another legendary shooter, NBA Hall of Fame player, Reggie Miller, reads a scouting report about Curry.
The parts read in Underrated are not flattering.
“Far below the NBA standard in regard to explosiveness and athleticism.”
“At 6’2, he’s extremely small for the NBA shooting guard position.”
“Do not rely on him to run your team.”
“Can overshoot and rush into shots.”
“Doesn’t like when defenses are too physical with him.”
“Not a great finisher around the basket due to his size and physical attributes.”
“Needs to add some muscle to his upper body but appears as though he’ll always be skinny.”
It’s important to reiterate that this is not the complete report and that hindsight is 20/20.
To the credit of the producers, having those words read to you as we watch Stephen Curry break the NBA record for three pointers, does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It begins convincing you that one of the best players of this era had his doubters and wasn’t guaranteed to be a success.
The documentary continues this all the way until the very end, where we hear the voices of sports television and radio continue to doubt Curry and the Golden State Warriors as they add another championship to their history. All of this is done very nicely and in a way that isn’t so much as an “I told you so” but “A let’s wait and see.”
And he’s also not done yet. The Warriors should be competitive again next year.
HELP! Hopefully, you found what you were looking for. I can’t do this without you. Can you help me out below!
