Hijack, the action suspense thriller on Apple TV, concluded its first season this week, with a finale that will have fans of the exciting story of the London bound Kingdom Air flight wanting more.
While it’s hard to believe that Apple TV won’t be considering it, there are a lot of moving parts that need to be weighed before moving forward.
Such as…
The availability of Idris Elba: Elba does a fine job on this show all the way down to its final seconds. But he’s also a global movie star and has more options than he knows what to do with. This does make us wonder if Apple TV would go with a different lead. If they did who would that be?
If the audience would fall into “airplane mode” if the environment isn’t changed: Another season on a plane wouldn’t be ideal. There is a precedent for these that have both been successful (Die Hard 2) and not so successful (Speed 2). “Hijack” could even work in a broader sense.
The timeline for the arrival of a second season: Apple TV isn’t necessarily in a hurry to follow up on seasons (where is our second season of Severance?!) It could be years before we get another campaign.
But it would definitely be worth the wait: Hijack got a lot of things right. I’ve said it a few times but it captured the TV spirit of “24”, one of the best action series of the modern era while maintaining its own identity. It was well acted. It looked good. It sounded good. And it kept me hooked from beginning to end.
Let’s hope a second season gets here sooner than later.
