“Miguel Wants To Fight” hits Hulu this week, and the tale surrounding a Syracuse high school kid who has never been in a physical confrontation, invokes several pop culture references. And as tough as it may seem to believe, some of them are a couple of decades old.
Let’s walk through them.
The “Enter The Dragon” fight scene in front of his dad: One of his first daydreams pulls from the Bruce Lee classic, and is widely considered one of the best martial arts films of all time. But the film turns 50 this year.
The “Kill Bill” reference: This one is an eye opener. The yellow jumpsuit as Miguel correctly states is from another Bruce Lee film “Game of Death”. But to anyone who is less than 30 years old, its completely possible that this has become “the chick from Kill Bill” or Uma Thurman’s outfit from the Tarantino two parter.
Morpheus vs. Neo: The fake fight in the Gym over the “Air Morgans” is a pull from “The Matrix” (which they mention) but the original line is “Do you think that’s air you’re really breathing” Morpheus tells the newest member of his team. The fight in the film takes place in the contruct dojo.
“Crouching Tigre”: This one might have been tougher to figure out if Miguel didn’t give us the hint. His showdown in the woods is a nod to another martial arts classic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.
These are clever references but if you’re not at least 30 years old, many of these jokes will fly over your head. And that’s unfortunate because it’s funny.
