Mall Cop Confessions: Dealing with bikes and skateboards

For entertainment purposes only

Ugh. Yeah, let’s go ahead and just charge into this topic.

For some reason, people love to bring their bikes and skateboards into the mall. They perform tricks. They disturb shoppers. Damage property. And they do so knowing very well that they’re not allowed to.

It is very likely that your shopping center does not allow skateboards or bicycles anywhere on the property besides the bike rack. And if they’re on a skateboard, those wheels had better not touch the floor indoors.

But they will violate all of these rules anyway.

This is where an outdoor patrol comes in useful. If you’ve got a vehicle outside you can see any of these bikers and boarders approaching, and if they don’t take their bikes to the racks, give them a warning. And if they don’t comply, they’re in violation of the rules. Act accordingly.

Oh, and all of this stuff applies to scooters too.

The problem here is that this is a serious safety issue. If you’ve got bikes racing through your mall and those bikes hit a customer, then you’ve got a medical emergency on your hands because these visitors couldn’t follow the rules. And what if they run into a small child or a baby carriage? It’s happened before.

And it also sets precedent. It’s seldom just one person on a bike or a skateboard, they can run in groups and before you know it, you’ve got an unsafe skatepark in your shopping center.

Be vigilant about bikes and boards and have a clear set of instructions on what actions to take if they’re in your mall. It could prevent a tragedy.
