My Lady Jane: Yeah, Groom of the Stool was really a thing

If a television show actually encourages you to look something up and fact check them, then you should do it. Especially, if it’s like My Lady Jane on Prime Video, which is both rewriting history while keeping some of it’s facts straight.

Let’s talk about Groom of the Stool.

During episode six of season one we hear this about King Edward, who is currently being held captive by a group of ethianite nuns, including his grandmother, who believes him to be one of their shapeshifting kind, and just needs to experience the right kind of trauma to get him to change into an animal. While he’s trying to escape we hear the superb narrator of this series say..

“As King, Edward didn’t even have to wipe his own a**. Someone else did it for him. It’s called the Groom of the Stool. Look it up. But now Edwared must finally take his fate and his a** into his own hands.”

Indeed The Groom of the Stool is a real thing. Much like you’ve seen in other period pieces, royalty has staff that does everything for them. They wake them up in the morning, they dress them, and they serve them throughout the day. Even while taking a bath.

Well, the Groom of the Stool was something of a really intense bathroom attendant. And yes, they would actually do the cleaning.

As for Edward’s escape attempt which we’re observing as this knowledge is thrown upon us, he runs into Fitz, who agrees to get him to safety for a hefty reward.

What did you think of this fact? And how are you enjoying My Lady Jane? Let me know in the comments.
