Bad Monkey: Yancy and Driggs, SNL ties, and Heather with the Weather

The best part of Bad Monkey’s first two episodes, which dropped on Apple TV this week was that we got what has really become something of a throwback Vince Vaughn in a detective role.

I’m talking about Old School, Wedding Crashers, and to a point, even Swingers Vince Vaughn. The joke cracking, big guy who’s trying to solve a murder instead of outwit Jeremy Piven in determining the fate of a college fraternity.

But I’m hoping to see Vaughn’s Yancy and Driggs the monkey share some screen time.

And Drigg’s is the actual monkey in “Bad Monkey” who has already had an effect on the plot by saving his owner, Neville, from an attacking German Shepherd.

I can’t wait for these two to get together to try to solve this murder. Do I want it to get gimmicky? Of course not, but I think it could actually be some good televison.

Some other thoughts from the first two episodes

Alex Moffat’s “Guy Who Just Bought a Boat” SNL character kinda gets some expansion: Happy to see some more SNL alumni get some solid Apple TV work. The streamer has already done a great job with Maya Rudolph (Loot), Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale), and Heidi Gardner (Shrinking).

Let’s have a quick word about Heather with the Weather: Wow, what a terrible lady! Really, have you ever seen someone with so little screen time, come off so mean and unlikable. It almost throws you off because the writers just threw us in the deep end with her. There has to be some kind of payoff with character like this one. Great work by Lauren Buglioli with just a couple of lines.

Great to see Michelle Monaghan again: Awesome to see Michelle Monaghan on a show my blog is covering. She’s been solid for a while now. Yeah, Spectrum commercials probably pay well (ask Mila Kunis and Demi Moore) but I’d rather watch her act.

See you guys next week!
