MTG Mono Red Man: Krark the Thumbless

Intro: Krark the Thumbless was one of the first mono red commanders I started with in Magic: The Gathering. This is because he allows you to copy your burn spells which allows you to shake up the game at double the rate we normally would. And more damage and destruction that rattles are detail oriented peers is why we love mono red.

But you’ve got to win that damn coin toss.

What the card actually says: Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, flip a coin, if you lose the flip return that spell to it’s owners hand. If you win the flip, copy that spell, and you may choose new targets for that copy.

Analysis: Krark can be your best friend. Or your worse enemy. When you’re lucky, he burns fast and can take out opponents before they get too powerful. But when you’re not lucky, he’s going to make you regret taking him out of the box. This is because not only are you wasting mana, but your enemies know what your burn spells are and can take action. There have been times when Krark has gotten in the way and I’ve intentionally sent him to get killed.

How it makes you feel when you play it: It all depends on heads or tails. When you’re able to double down on powerful burn cards then Krark is just lovely. But I don’t play Krark if I’m serious about winning a game. Turns are too precious for mono red players and Krark plays toward the more reckless angles our our philosophy.

Conclusion: Krark is something else, man. I love my goblins, but if you want to be silly, there are certainly less risky ways to be that way.

What do you think? Have you played Krark? Let me know in the comments.
