21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street hop to Netflix and deserve the fun rewatch

In the 12 and 10 years since 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street were released in theaters, we’ve continued to get beaten down with bad reboots and reimaginings of every kind of entertainment medium you can think of. However, these pair of buddy cop comedies did it right and arrive on Netflix this month.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, are both in their comedy prime as Schmidt and Jenko, two different kinds of cops who discovered they needed each other during their police training and become good friends. They’re equally unserious, but somehow find themselves part of an undercover unit that is infiltrating educational institutions to stop crime. Throw in Ice Cube as their new boss and the stage is set for all kinds of craziness.

And for the most part it works.

Hill and Tatum had such great chemistry here and most of the jokes land throughout the two films. And they’re not alone. You’ll find Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, and plenty of others falling into the story here. The action is pretty terrific as well and injects some excitement into the funny outing. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller nail the pacing perfectly in both films.

Yeah, you’ll have to suspend your belief for the movies. But even they understand this and joke about how old the two look for pretending to be high school kids.

Which one is better? I like 21 Jump Street. The Schmidt and Jenko story is actually a kind one and the antagonist of the first film gives it a slight edge.

It’s a definite must watch on a streamer like Netflix if it’s somehow managed to pass you by this long.

In closing, this two piece franchise was so funny, they wanted to use the two characters for a Men In Black reboot. It never materialized and we got Men In Black: International instead. What a wasted opportunity.

But these two films are worth a watch for sure.
