“Barbarian” haunts Hulu just in time for Halloween
If there were a Halloween draft for horror movies made over the last five years, “Barbarian”, which arrives on Hulu just in time for the spooky holiday, would be a pretty high draft pick.
The film, which made a little bit of noise in 2022 when released, might have passed many of you by, and now would certainly be the season to check it out.
Georgina Campbell stars as Tess, who books the worst AirBnB ever in Detroit for an interview. When she arrives, she finds that it’s been double booked, and along with her impromptu roommate, they discover that the house has a horrifying secret.
Spooky. Right? No? Well, on print, I would guess not.
But the reason that “Barbarian” is so well regarded in horror circles is because a lot of us went in watching it without having a clue what the actual danger in the movie is. And I’m going to leave that frightening discovery to you. The film also stars Justin Long, who’s a borderline OG in horror if you’re under 30 by this point, and he does another fine job here.

Director Zach Cregger gives us a pretty lean and definitely mean horror movie here. There are some story decisions that might leave you scratching your head or don’t give you the kinds of things that you want to see, but this is a horror after all. You need to feel like you’ve survived something. There also isn’t any serious star power, which is why you may have missed it the first time.
However, Barbarian is a fine horror film, and if you’ve got Hulu, it’s probably better than most of the other horror options you’ve got there right about now.
