Green Bay Drivers Don’t Respect Pedestrian Walk Signals

It happens every other day if you’re a walker in Green Bay.

You’ll be making your way to an intersection like Oneida or Walnut, you’ll reach the crosswalk and wait for the pedestrian signal to turn on. It does and you begin to make your way across the street.

And then a driver makes a flying left hand turn from across the way, or a scary fast right turn and almost hits you.

This is because they are only looking at their green light and nothing else.

They’re not looking at the pedestrian walk signal.

Now the reason they’re not doing this, and are in danger of seriously hurting or even killing a pedestrian can be for one of two reasons.

They’re not paying attention: This is the most likely motive to the dangerous driving. They’ve got the green light. They think they’re all in the clear to drive past the crosswalk. They’re not acknowledging the right of way by the pedestrian. While this is a dangerous mistake, that driver is likely to remember their error and try not to repeat it.

They’re ignorant: There are some drivers who believe they’re in the right. It’s the walkers making the mistake, even though they’re the ones piloting the machine that could very easily kill us.

What’s the solution? Enforcement: Now there were soft pedestrian safety exercises in the Green Bay area at very peaceful intersections that don’t get very busy. That deserves acknowledgement.

But if we’re not fixing the problem where most of the instances take place then it won’t make a difference.

This is a serious problem. We’ve got cars that are taking these turns at high speeds. If we don’t get serious about fixing the issue, then someone will get hurt.

Tell your local leaders we need to protect our pedestrians!
