Dancing with the Stars: Understanding how and why Gene Simmons upset the viewers
Imagine it’s the 80s, and hair metal/rock is at it’s peak. Everywhere you looks, you’ve got the life of sex, drugs, and rock roll. Cocaine at parties, guitars gettings smashed, women dancing on the hood of muscle cars.
This is the era of Gene Simmons.
But this week, when Gene Simmons was invited on to be a guest judge on Dancing with the Stars, when it was all said and done, many viewers would have rather not had a guest judge at all.

This is because 75 year old Gene Simmons believed that Dancing with the Stars wanted that out of date personality. It was Hair Metal night. So, Gene Simmons gave them that rebellious personality during his critiques. This unfortunately meant a superficial and outdated read of what he was observing.
Should Simmons have “read the room” and understood that this was a dancing competition and not the music video set in 1986? Yes.
Does this logic absolve him? No. Even though he did begin to realize what was happening during the last few performances, and showed some remorse at times.
But you’ve got to look at the Dancing with the Stars showrunners and wonder if they had prepped their guest judge correctly. There should not have even been a “10” paddle in his reach.
You know, I thought Rosie Perez did a good job on Soul Train night just 24 hours, but wondered why she drew from Carrie Ann so much. It might be because these celebrities aren’t being given the rules of engagement.
Sadly, it’s done. It’s too bad for Gene Simmons. And unfortunate that for younger viewers of the show, that will be what they pull from when they hear his name in the future.
