Trending: Trump comedian panned after calling Puerto Rico an “Island of Garbage”
In what could be a costly error for the Donald Trump campaign in the homestretch of a too close to call election, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico an “Island of Garbage” at a rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
This led to Puerto Rico trending on social media and Hinchcliffe being slammed on social media while also trending in the negative.
The insult comes during a time when the GOP was making advances among Latinos and could call negative attention to the Trump campaign in the final days of the campaign.
Hinchcliffe did not issue an apology and sent out this post. Trump supporters also rushed to defend Hinchcliffe.
These people have no sense of humor. Wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his “busy schedule” to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it seem racist. I love Puerto Rico and vacation there. I made fun of everyone…watch the whole set. I’m a… https://t.co/VFxHRcdv5k

Users on social media were not pleased…
I’m a huge Tony Hinchcliffe fan. I’ve lost some respect for Tony today because his entire thing has always been that in comedy you can say whatever you want in a comedy club and that doesn’t make it real. They’re jokes and people need to grow up if they get offended. But you just… https://t.co/w9ZvyPm7X5

truly the height of cowardice to say unquestionably racist shit and then try walk it back saying it was "taken out of context to make it seem racist" like he told some sophisticated joke that just went over our heads. there's no additional context you're just an unfunny racist https://t.co/DoFm5rn1gP

I’m so tired of overt racism being rationalized as “comedy” what Tony Hinchcliffe does isn’t comedy, it’s the most basic racist jokes that a high schooler can come up with. There’s nothing clever about his jokes, it’s just racist stereotypes

Hi Tony
We’re aware that you’re a comedian. But when you are a featured speaker at a campaign event, what you say reflects on the campaign.
If no one from the campaign informed you of that, they screwed you royally.

When you have to tell people that you are a comedian, maybe you aren’t great at your job. https://t.co/xB1p1FMJ9G

There hasn’t been any response from the Trump campaign following the joke.
Puerto Ricans in swing states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Michigan, could make a difference in the outcome of the election with many polls showing Donald Trump and Kamala Harris neck and neck moving towards election day on November 5th.
