Criminally undermentioned “Crawl” is on Prime Video for both Halloween and it’s fifth anniversary
“Quick, Frank! Name a hidden suspense gem to watch for Halloween!”
Goodness. It’s got to be “Crawl”. A film that made a little noise before the pandemic and has since disappeared. It’s on Prime Video in time for it’s fifth anniversary, and if you want a lean mean (real) creature feature, there aren’t too many others like this one out there.
The film stars Kaya Scodelario as Haley, a college student, who heads into a hurricane to go looking for her father (played here by fan favorite Barry Pepper), but this storm gets out of hand so quickly that the rising waters bring out giant alligators and Haley has to find help for her injured dad while trying not to be eaten alive.
“Crawl” never had any business being this good. The trailer made the movie look like a dud, but when it came out, I was pleasantly surprised. The effects are good. The suspense is present for almost the entirety of it’s wonderful 87 minute run time, and director Alexandre Aja never lets us get bored.
Yeah, there are some eye rolling character decisions made early on in the movie, but we quickly forget about those when the action really gets going. This is also an organic horror. Which means the monsters are animals. There are no killer clowns or nightmare horrors to be found if that is your flavor for Halloween.
But if you just want a good, suspenseful and fast watch when your Halloween escapades have wrapped up, then you could do far worse than “Crawl”.
I wish more people talked about it.
