Only Murders In The Building: 5 thoughts on the S4 finale, 3 hopes for the S5 mystery

The fourth season of Only Murders In the Building is behind us, and as many fans predicted, it was indeed Marshall/Rex that was our killer. Fueled by his jealously of Sazz’s writing abilities and hunger for fame.

Let’s unpack all of this.

We’re going to do this list style. Here are 5 thoughts on the season four finale of Only Murders In The Building and three hopes for season 5.

Jane Lynch is the season 4 MVP: She brought some much needed heart this season. I’m not even a super fan of hers or anything. She still had me feeling some melancholy warmth in that final talk with Charles. The old videos. The flashbacks. Some of Lynch’s best work.

Marshall was a weak killer: That opening text made me believe we had someone to take really seriously. Instead, he was a cartoon that fell for some stupid tricks and got ‘got’ by Jan (Amy Ryan was actually in ‘The Wire’ by the way).

The wedding and cliffhanger were really well done: Meryl Steep. You’re still the best. Loretta didn’t wear out her welcome and the wedding was a really sweet affair.

But I never felt safe. I think that was the point.

And when we saw poor Lester, and met Sofia (Tea Leoni is going to be great next season) I was charged up again.

The “Moriarty” theory from the fandom was wrong and dumb: If you followed the narrative online, we were supposed to get a mastermind reveal. It didn’t happen. There were no clues indicating it would happen. The fans need to calm down.

Season 4 was the worst season so far: Sorry. It was. We had guest stars for the sake of guest stars (The ‘Westies’ were terrible characters). Two of these episodes could have been eliminated (The Sisters Brothers and the Homecoming).
Love the show.
Didn’t love season 4.

Hopes for season 5:

Let’s hope it a strong and final season: Only Murders in the Building has won. It won before this season. But many of the greats end after five seasons. Let’s finish this run on a higher level and not drag this out.

Let’s hope it centers on Charles, Oliver, and Mabel: We get it. Famous people want to be on this show. Heck, I want to be on this show. But OMITB is still at its best with Steve, Martin, and Selena steering the ship. I don’t want Paul Rudd killed again.

Tease but don’t commit to a spin off: If the show wants to explore a Mabel solo show, or introduce a new character in the final season to expand on, test it, tease it. And let’s see what happens.
