Removal of Packers Heritage Trail will hurt interest in visiting downtown
The Packers Heritage Trail location will have to move to make way for condos in downtown Green Bay. The city and the Heritage Trail organization have come to terms and the statues will be relocated (story HERE).
It will hurt the downtown area both in terms of economic development and in drawing outside visitors to the area.
For the uninitiated, the plaza consists of a picturesque scene of Green Bay Packers legends. The location draws bus tours, segway tours, and almost everyone from outside of the area visiting the convention center nearby stops to check it out.
It might be the best photo opp downtown. It’s probably the only photo opp downtown depending on what time of day you’re visiting.
Now, there are the defenders of those luxury condos that pull from industry talking points that they will provide economic development to the area.
They’re ignoring the fact that there are condos already there, and there hasn’t been any kind of noticeable economic growth in the area. You have to drive 10-15 minutes to get to a decent grocery store. As it lies, downtown residents face an inconvenient errand when they need simple necessities.
It’s hard to believe that a compromise couldn’t have been reached.
The truth is that we have the NFL draft coming here in a couple of months. And here we are taking measures to remove points of interest regarding football, and the region’s rich history as one it’s most beloved ambassadors.
But we can speculate that tens of millions of eyeballs will probably appreciate condo construction too.
