Death of a Unicorn: Five First Impressions from the First Trailer

Wednesday morning, ahead of the Superman trailer drop later this week, A24 gifted us with some terrific looking counter program in the form of “Death of a Unicorn”. A horror-comedy involving a group of zany characters who find and then try to exploit the death of the mythical creature.

Here are five first impressions:

This is a gorgeous and talented “Knives Out” caliber cast: Paul Rudd, Tea Leoni, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, and more. Ortega is on top of the planet right now. Rudd and Leoni are “Only Murders” alum. And Rudd and Poulter are also in the MCU. This is a compact cast “Knives Out” producers would probably approve of.

The dark humor is “on fleek: Forgive the dated slang. I just felt like typing “on fleek”. Seriously, the Ortega vape pull in the trailer. Poulter declaring he shouldn’t be wearing swim trunks. It works.

The nature reserve is specifically there to study unicorns: With the wealthy philanthropist and the on site scientists, this doesn’t feel like new territory to some of these guys. They’re curing cancer. That equals $$$.

That unicorn has got kin coming for it: The unicorn in captivity has some family that would like it returned. And I don’t think they’re going to be very kind about it. It looks like the big bad could be a huge black unicorn, who’s already killing people.

The A24 flavor is here: It feels very much like an A24 film and the Everything, Everywhere, All At Once name drop is a welcomed flex from the filmmakers that have gone against the rebooted to hell, state of current film and television production.
