Shrinking: The hard lesson I learned from Louis in the S2 finale

Wow. What a great season of Shrinking. The sophomore campaign may have actually been better than the first, and I can’t wait to see these guys come back for a third time.

And show runners almost did the impossible. They almost got me to forgive Louis after killing Tia in the drunk driving accident.

But I never got there. I was hard wired not to forgive him for what he took from the characters I care about.

Let’s be clear. I have been anti “DD” since he showed up. And the writers did everything they could to get the audience on their side. And it worked.

They got Brett Goldstein aka Roy “F******” Kent from Ted Lasso to play him.

They made him frail. He lost everything.

They left him stranded on Thanksgiving, after a detestable turn by his co workers.

And they almost threw him in front of a train. That was something I did not want to see. I’m not that jaded, yet.

But like many of you, I was happy to see Jimmy show up.

If there was a lesson I learned as an anti Louis hardliner, it was that this man killing himself wasn’t going to bring back Tia. It wasn’t going to undo the pain that Jimmy and Alice went through. If anything it would have dropped us deeper into the waters, we were trying so furiously to swim out of.

In the end, like all of you, I was “fighting for my life” watching this all play out on my phone in public, trying not to look like I was the one under duress on a holiday.

And I watched the closing shot with a smile on my face on Christmas eve, loving television, and with an understanding of what redemption under the toughest of circumstances might look like.

What did you think of the Shrinking S2 finale? Let me know in the comments.
