“Seven” celebrates 30th anniversary and the ending still shakes the soul

It’s been 30 years since I walked into a theater to watch Se7en, a David Fincher directed suspense thriller starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. I have no memory of how I was feeling when I walked into my midnight showing, after a shift of flipping burgers as a teenager.

You should watch Seven on the biggest screen possible! Including this new TV from Amazon! Buy one HERE!

But I will never, ever forget how I felt walking out. It felt like the wind had been knocked out of me. It felt like something was taken from me that I’ll never get back.

As we celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the film, and as it heads back to theaters, the ending of Se7en is still one of the most memorable ever. So much so, that I still won’t spoil it here.

When we meet Detective Somerset, who’s getting ready to retire and Detective Mills, his apparent successor, we’re plunged into a dark and rainy world trying to catch a killer that is murdering his victims in concert with the seven deadly sins. Sloth, greed, lust and so on. All of these killings are done in the most demented ways possible. Even now, in 2025, they are still creatively morbid and sick.

While I was just a kid, I thought our protagonists had a shot of winning the day. But as an adult with a couple of more decades of film behind me, I realize they never had a shot.

Despite the devastation, Seven is a masterpiece, and Fincher, who has at least half a dozen more visual gems since, is in his bag here doing unforgettable work.

It’s one of my favorite films. And gets my highest recommendation possible even 30 years later.
