On Call: Opening scene of Prime Video cop drama will infuriate you

On Call, is the new police drama procedural premiering on Prime Video this week, and the show gets off to a promising start, with creative takes on the genre, such as police cam footage of the action.

But first we have to talk about the opening scene of the show, which made me absolutely furious, and had me “angry addicted” for the rest of the hour.

In the first scene we meet officer Maria Delgado (Monica Raymund from the “One Chicago” franchise), conducting a traffic stop. She approaches the vehicle, and begins a pleasant conversation with someone she recognizes who just got off of probation.

But things seem off. There is a woman, who is obviously under the influence of a substance in the front seat. And there is an unidentified man in the back seat who appears aggressive and anxious at Delgado’s presence.

Maria senses, something is off and while she is calling for help, the man in the back seat guns her down. The car speeds off as she lays on the concrete bleeding out from her neck.

There are witnesses nearby. But get this. They don’t help Delgado by putting pressure on the wound, or by going for help.

They film this police officer on their phones as she dies.

If the show’s intent was to galvanize the viewer, it succeeded. It makes you care immediately.

And the rest of the first episode is also very well done.

The first scene of a program is so important. We can nail down a lot of our favorites from their first scenes.

In that regard, “On Call” does a tremendous job. Even if you are really upset, and desperate for revenge the rest of the time your watching it.

What did you think of On Call? And how did you feel about that opening scene? Let me know in the comments.
