NFL: Eagles should be ashamed of vulgar fan harassing Packers supporter

Update: The Eagles have banned this fan. Thank you to their organization.

The bad behavior of Philadelphia sports fans is not a myth or even an exaggeration. It’s a real problem that reflects poorly on the city and it’s sports organizations.

Sunday’s NFL playoff game featuring the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Green Bay Packers was marred by a viral video clip of an Eagles fan berating a Packers fan by calling her things I won’t repeat on this blog.

The Philadelphia Eagles have been silent and so have many supporters of the team. This silence is an indictment that this is exactly what they stand for.

They won’t defend it. But they’re proud of it. And in the bars during commercials, and as a subject of small talk during bus rides, Eagles fans are defending this guy and reveling in the negative buzz like a D-list tabloid celebrity.

If Philadelphia was really interested in making this right, they’d issue a statement condemning the behavior, and that sports fan would be banned from all Eagles games for the rest of his life.

Think that’s harsh? What if it were your mom? Your wife? Your daughter getting called those things by an opposing fan while she was simply trying to enjoy a football game? You’d be furious.

And where was this behavior going? I know where. It was going to get physical next. If fans like these are readily throwing out slurs, you can’t rule out physical violence.

This is the reality of watching sports in Philadelphia.

And being silent should send a message to the NFL and all sport organizations.

Fans can’t visit your city and enjoy a game in peace. You don’t deserve them.

In a couple of months, we’ll be hosting the NFL draft here in Green Bay. Eagles fans will visit us here at home. And they will be treated with friendship and respect.

That’s what we stand for. But that’s not what Philadelphia stands for.
