Abbott Elementary: Unpacking Melissa’s “practice” joke about Allen Iverson

Abbot Elementary gave us another enjoyable episode, with Janine trying to figure out the secret behind her class failing a prep test, and Jacob trying to get an introverted student to find his joy.

But if you’re here, it’s likely that the Melissa joke that she made about Allen Iverson twice, went over your head.

In 2002, Philadelphia 76ers legend, Allen Iverson, got frustrated in a press conference, after the Sixers continued to stall in their run for a championship. His work ethic, and more specifically, his effort in making practices came into question.

“I’m supposed to be the franchise player and we’re in here talking about practice. Not a game. Not a game. Not a game. We’re talking about practice.” Iverson repeated a few times during the presser. “When you come into the arena, you’ve seen me play right? You’ve seen me give everything I’ve got, right? But we’re talking about practice right now.”

You can watch the clip below. While adored in Philly, Iverson never won a ring because he was turned away by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal in his trip to the finals.

And yes, Janine had a break through with her kids, by switching up her approach with more visual aids.

And Jacob never really did find RJ a hobby that he enjoyed. It was strange for the show to leave that thread open. They could pick it up later as something more serious.

And finally, that was indeed Eric Andre who played Cedric the “Jani-tainer” who was sent by the district to replace Mr. Johnson.
