Why the trailer for “Locked” reminds of me of “Drag Me To Hell”

The new trailer for “Locked” dropped (shut them down, open up shop) today, and for some reason, I can’t stop thinking of another Sam Raimi connected film when I watch it.

It reminds me of “Drag Me To Hell”. Let me explain.

If you watch “Locked” you’ll see Bill Skarsgard’s Eddie, a down on his luck soul, who is trying to take things from unlocked cars and becomes trapped in this demonic Escalade knock off, which is being controlled by “William” played by the great Anthony Hopkins. William tortures Eddie using everything in the high tech vehicle from seat tasers, to freezing climate control settings.

In “Drag Me To Hell” Alison Lohman’s Christine, is a banker who turns down a gypsy for an extension on her mortgage in order to get a promotion, and is cursed for her fiscal vigilance. She is tortured by hallucinations and unfortunate events for doing so.

Where is the connection here? Besides Raimi?

Atonement for bad behavior. Paying the price for your actions. In “Drag Me To Hell” Christine could have been kinder to the gypsy and saver herself a whole lot of trouble. But instead, because of her cruelty, punishment is carried, or dragged, forward.

“Locked” gives me that same vibe. While Eddie is shown to have some kindness (giving water to a thirsty dog), he wouldn’t be in his situation if he wasn’t trying to break into someone’s car.

You know there will be some fancy car drivers who will be rooting against Eddie. You know it.

So, yeah. Know who you’re dealing with and try to do the right thing.
