The White Lotus: Why Laurie may have been crying in the end

It’s hard to pick my favorite angle of season 3 of the White Lotus because the cast is so dog-gone good. But I’ve settled on my three long time TV crushes with the Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), Kate (Leslie Bibb), and Laurie (Carrie Coon) because they’re also excellent and underrated actors, with a fair bit of mystery behind their visit to the resort.

The biggest girl getaway question after the premiere was a pretty straight forward one. Why was Laurie crying after she saw Jaclyn and Kate talking without her?

While obviously we don’t get a straight forward answer while she’s crying, we’re led to believe it’s because she’s feeling like the loser in the group.

She’s parked in this awkward corner room away from the other two, with these monkeys staring at her. That’s even mentioned early on.

But we also have to remember their earlier conversation over drinks.

Jaclyn is apparently a celebrity. She’s even recognized by the pool.

Kate is a successful business woman. That’s mentioned during the toast.

But Laurie appears to be a regular mom.

While you and me and everyone else on the street will tell you that there is nothing wrong with that, you can still feel like a loser when you’re sequestered in a resort with excellence.

This angle may resonate with viewers. It certainly does with me. I came from a world of super successful people. I’m the Laurie of my group. You may be in a similar situation.

I’ll be rooting for Laurie (although The White Lotus typically isn’t kind to characters boiling on the inside), and Coon doing more winning work on HBO next to her Gilded Age gig will always make sure I’m in front of the TV.
