“Good American Family” feels like a “Orphan” with Meredith Grey
With the amount of content produced all over the world each year, similarities between stories are inevitable. Even if not used as inspiration, it feels like every device used to advance a story has already been done several times over.
Including the family with spare love to give adopting an evil child.
I’m talking about “Good American Family”, the Hulu offering starring Ellen Pompeo in a rare role away from our beloved “Grey’s Anatomy” playing the foster mother of an orphan that at first they believe to have dwarfism, but could potentially be an adult.
Just like “Orphan”, the 2009 film starring Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard, which served up the same concept.
“Good American Family” leans awfully hard on “Orphan”.
There are some differences. The tone is different. Pompeo almost seems to be playing into an over the top space as a character. And this orphan seems to be more of a con artist than a murderer. And that’s if she’s actually not a kid, then that might be the only way to limit the connections when thinking about the two stories.
And let’s be clear. I’m a big Ellen Pompeo fan. That’s what happens when you’ve been playing the same character for the last 20 years, and your show has delivered some of the most incredible moments of television ever.
That’s why I’m still going to give “Good American Family” a shot. While it feels like we’ve seen this before, there is just enough unrecognizable noise to lead us to believe there may be something more.
