Adolescence: Yes, there are only 4 episodes of the Netflix limited series
If you’re here, you were probably wondering what most viewers of “Adolescence” on Netflix were wondering.
“Is that it?”.
Sadly, you’re right. There are only four episodes of the one shot per episode story about Jamie, a 13 year old boy, accused of murdering another girl in his class.

And the limited series, is more about emotion in the moment, than it is about ensuring continuity. The final episode is a heartbreaking affair, that centers around Jamie’s dad, Eddie, on his 50th birthday, and the toll that Jamie’s actions have taken on the entire family.
And we don’t get a happy ending. Quite the opposite.
In the end of Adolescence, Eddie gets a phone call from Jamie that his son has decided to plead guilty in the death of his classmate. While it’s not a shock to the audience, given the video, and Jamie’s disturbing behavior in the last episode with the psychiatrist, it’s certainly a sad “clean up” in the final moments, where Eddie is crying on his son’s bed, and apologizes to him in spirit as he tucks a teddy bear under the covers before leaving the room.
Despite the abrupt ending, the show is still a storytelling success. The one shot approach was a nice change of pace, even though it is a clever way to monetize “dead time” in the story. The performances lead by Stephen Graham (my boy Tommy from Snatch, I see you), Erin Doherty as Briony, and of course Owen Cooper as Jamie are all noteworthy.
And the fact that their audience is making sure they’ve seen everything reflects very well on the entire effort of the production.
