Good American Family: Natalia Grace Episode Five Perspective Change May Salvage Series

It turns out perspective really may be everything.

At least that’s what “Good American Family” is proving with an episode five that was the best of the series to date, by showcasing Imogen Faith Reed and magnifying the perspective of Natalia Grace. When that disclaimer flashed, we got the last blurb specifying this which caused me to refocus on what has been a tough to watch exercise so far.

And we pick up from the last show, with Natalia Grace struggling to live on her own. She’s acting like a child, as she tries to simply feed herself and survive. She climbs on counters, she has accidents with kitchen knives an eight year old shouldn’t be handling, and struggles to generally take care of herself.

She makes friends with JJ (played by the perpetually underrated Jane Adams, who’s been doing good work for decades now) and attempts to reconnect with the Barnetts.

But perspective comes into play with Michael acting like a completely different person and forcing Natalia to document her conditions through misdirection, and a failed trip to her old home with JJ’s grandson leads to her progress being undone after she has to relocate.

And then we meet bizarro, Kristine, and get Ellen Pompeo playing it cruel from the perspective of Natalia, in a way some of us have never seen her act before. It’s unsettling watching our Meredith Grey go villainous on us. But that’s what we signed up for, and wanted for Pompeo with this project.

Truth is we really needed this swerve.

The perspective of the Barnetts allows us to wallow with Natalia’s bad side. This resulted in anger and frustration.

Natalia’s side of the story makes us feel hope when she progresses, and sadness when we realize she’s alone.

Too bad, Good American Family didn’t alternate episodes this way instead of going with a month of Natalia acting bratty.
