Green Bay Police should absolutely start ticketing those ignoring “Move Over” Law
It’s not a big ask when you think about it.
If you’re driving through Green Bay and you see an first responder’s vehicle, you should slow down and move over into the next lane. This gives our first responders the safe space needed to do their jobs out of harm’s way, and continue keeping our communities safe.
It’s called a “Move Over” law, and you’ll find that many other cities and states also have it.
It should be called the “Don’t be a dangerous jerk” law. Because only a jerk wouldn’t slow down and put our police officers, fire fighters and paramedics in danger.
Still, drivers in the Green Bay area have to be reminded (story HERE).
If they have to be reminded and they don’t comply, then they’ll have to be reminded harder. That means citations. Well deserved citations if you ask me.
People have died helping others in roadways. But offenders never learn.
Regular readers might be asking “Hey Frank. You don’t even own a car. You’re a pedestrian. Why do you care?”
Because the same offenders that aren’t following the “Move Over” law, are the same drivers that ignore pedestrian walk signals, and treat crosswalks and school zones more like suggestions than laws put in place to keep the community safe.
And the only way some of these dangerous drivers learn is to hit them in the wallet.
In closing, it’s already dangerous being a first responder. If drugs or alcohol are involved the person they’re trying to save is even more difficult.
They don’t need to worry about sloppy drivers endangering their lives as well.
