VA owes elderly Missouri Veteran explanation to why he had to leave his nursing home
Infuriating news out of Edina, Missouri, this week, where we learned that an elderly Vietnam veteran had to abruptly leave his nursing home after they learned that their contract was cancelled. The contract was originally scheduled to go to until 2027 (story HERE).
Larry Stone never received an explanation on why he all the sudden had to move, and neither did the staff at the Knox County Nursing Home where he had been staying.
It’s simply unacceptable, and a step in the wrong direction for a Department of Veterans Affairs, who is supposed to be going in a different direction. And that has to start by being more transparent and giving us clear answers.
And if you’re a fellow veteran, you’re likely asking yourself the same question I’m asking myself.
“What if this happens to me?”
That’s valid. The truth is that we’ve become to accustomed to simply accepting answers from the VA without explanation. They continue to be this monolith of inaction, and incapable of empathizing.
Mr. Stone was able to find another place to go. But there are many other veterans out there who won’t be so lucky.
We must keep pushing for answers as the Department of Veterans Affairs acts but that only seems to happen during Congressional hearings.
One day, it hopefully won’t take that.
