Sturgeon Bay Cinema is right not to tolerate destructive “Minecraft” movie challenge

“A Minecraft Movie” may be the highest grossing movie of the year through the middle of April, but it’s unfortunately spawned the dumbest trend I’ve seen in decades of being a movie fan.

The “Chicken Jockey” challenge that has been going around online, requires fans to derail the screening of the movie by jumping on their chairs, throwing popcorn in the air, and running through the aisles of the movie theater. It’s not just dumb, it’s also dangerous and destructive.

One Northeast Wisconsin movie theater is taking a stand. The Sturgeon Bay Cinema 6 facility is enforcing the nationwide response to the bad behavior by implementing a no unaccompanied minors and no concessions sales to minors rule (story HERE).

The ridiculous part of all of this is that there are people on the thread defending the online challenge. These are the same kinds of parents that expect shopping malls and movie theaters to serve as babysitters and absorb the punishment they receive because of their lazy parenting.

They don’t understand that movies just aren’t a simple escape these days. They cost a significant amount of money. It can cost north of $60 dollars to take a family to the theater. And they don’t want their movie ruined by a bunch of followers who saw this dumb challenge on Tik Tok and don’t want popcorn thrown at them.

I’m fortunate enough to come from the video game generation. I remember seeing Mortal Kombat 30 years ago on opening weekend and having a good time. You know what the challenge was back then?

Cheering and clapping. And not ruining an important night out for the families who don’t want to be forced into your attempt to be a viral trend.

Good for that Sturgeon Bay Cinema 6 Movie Theater.
