The Handmaid’s Tale: S6E5 The Illusion of New Bethlehem
The Handmaid’s Tale is speeding towards it’s conclusion, and this week, while not huge on series making moments, did offer a lot of activity.
We had June, Luke, and Moira head off to Jezebels to set their plan into motion for a revolution, while also attempting to rescue Janine. After some early setbacks, we get our June and Janine reunion, but it’s shortened by an incoming group of commanders. Janine pairs off with Lawrence after he saves her from Bell, and Janine tips him in on a peephole to spy on his colleagues.
Turns out Lawrence is building them a trap. Gilead plans to lure back refugees to New Bethlehem and just throw them into slavery again. Then they plan on killing Lawrence.
After June and Moira are discovered, they incinerate the body of a guard that tried to rape them and are trapped in the Jezebels garage, before Lawrence finds them an allows them to jump in his car trunk to escape. The last shot is Lawrence closing the trunk door on them while June is in mid sentence.

Elsewhere, we learn that one of the guardians Nick shot last week survived. While it was easy enough to shoot them in defense of the mission, Nick now has to go to the hospital room and assassinate the remaining person who recognizes him from the attack. While amnesia appears to have affected the guard, Nick doesn’t take any chances and appears to finish the job behind closed doors.
And in the least important storyline of the week, Serena Joy agrees to marry Wharton after a proposal in a library. Aunt Lydia may have pushed her after reminding her that being unmarried and fertile in Gilead is not the best idea.
